Official 2010 Commemorative Poster

This year's winning poster design was painted by local artist Amanda Outcalt. It features a self-portrait of Outcalt strolling the water’s edge, with goldfish flying all around her. The theme of this year's poster contest was "Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts."

“My artwork examines and embraces the changing roles of women,” explained Outcalt. “My paintings reveal the conflict I feel about fulfilling traditional feminine roles while seeking my own independence. The reappearing goldfish in my paintings symbolize this duality. A goldfish traditionally represents abundance, happiness, and good fortune; however, it can also be a symbol of entrapment. In domestication it can only grow to the size of its bowl.”

Outcalt creates paintings and metalwork in a studio in Norfolk, Virginia. She teaches enameling at the Titustown Visual Arts Center and is a Museum Educator at the Children’s Museum of Virginia.

Pre-orders are available May 15. Call CAC at 757.425.0000 x.0 to pre-order a poster for $20. CAC accepts cash, check, Visa and MasterCard.

New This Year: In addition to Outcalt’s commemorative poster design, CAC will offer two other poster prints for $20 each. A bright, textural painting of whimsical fish and sea life by exhibiting artist Renata Keep commemorates her exhibition which is in view through August 22. Keep has been involved in Boardwalk Art Show & Festival since 1952, and was integral to the inception of CAC. The other poster commemorates CAC’s exhibition celebrating Boardwalk Art Show, “Our Museum Evolution: Select Works from the Boardwalk Art Show Collection.” It is a still life watercolor by 1996 Best in Show Winner Gustavo Castillo. Pre-orders are accepted for these prints as well, and they will also be available at the boardwalk and in the Museum Shop.

SPECIAL: Get all three posters for $55!
